OPEN SOURCE CLOUD COMPUTING RESOURCES.

The Open Source phrase refers to a unique software agreement that allows end users to freely use or modify a software in a way that suites them.

Characteristics of open source in cloud computing include:

Source code availability – The source code is provided so that the end user can modify to suit their needs.

Community collaboration – Open source projects have communities of developers and contributors who collaborate to improve the software.

Freedom of use – There is freedom to use and even distribute the software for any use.

Flexibility and customization – With access to the source code it is easy to customize the software to meet the specific requirements of the end user.

Some of the popular open source cloud computing resources.

OpenStack – It is used as infrastructure as a service (Iaas). The software is meant to create private and public clouds. Users will be able to control compute, storage and networking resources throughout the data centre.

Key Features:

Services: Messages, containers, clustering, compute, identity, optimization and deployment Web front-end, Big Data processing framework, container orchestration engine and NFV orchestration.

Eucalyptus - is an open source software for creating AWS-compatible private and hybrid clouds. It is also a Linux based software architecture that performs scalable private and hybrid clouds within IT infrastructure.

Key Features:

Works with various hypervisors.

Communication within internal processes is guarded through SOAP and WS-Security.

Administrative features like user and group management and reports.

Opennebula – is a flexible turkey open-source solution to create private clouds and maintain Data Center virtualization. It implements Iaas.

Key Features:

Supports APIs like AWS EC2 and OGF OCCI.

Powerful UNIX based CLI for administration.

Apache CloudStack – It maintains networks as an infrastructure as a service (IaaS). It is a software that provides a cloud orchestration layer, providing automation of the creation, provision and configuration of IaaS components.

Key Features:

Self-service user interface: AJAX console access, network virtualization.

LVM support: Block storage volumes, LDAP integration, OpenStack swift integration.
