Mobility management techniques in mobile communication
Mobility management is a crucial aspect of mobile communication systems that enables seamless connectivity for users as they move across different geographical areas or network domains.
Overview of mobility management encompassing two functions which are
i. Location management where tracking and updating location information of mobile devices to facilitate efficient call delivery and data routing
ii. Handover management managing transition of an active call or data session from one network cell or channel to as the user moves
Location management techniques involving tracking mobile devices whereabouts within the network to ensure they can be reached when communication is initiated
I. Periodic update where mobile devices update their location information at intervals
II. Movement-based update occurring after device moves across a predefined number of cells
III. Distance-based update they are triggered when device moves a certain distance form the last reported location
IV. Even-driven update location update occur based on specific events such as entering a new location area or network domain
V. Paging when a call or data session is initiated towards a mobile device the network pages the device in its last known location area
VI. Database management –home location register , visitor location register, hierarchical mobility management
Handover management techniques ensures ongoing calls or data session are maintained as users
Type of handover
I. Infra-system handover
II. Inter-system handover
III. Horizontal handover
IV. Vertical handover r
Mobility management entity network responsible for managing mobility functions, such as location tracking ,paging, and handover
Location area code geographical area within mobile network that is served by a group of base stations used efficiently track the location of mobile devices and reduce paging overhead
Challenges and future trends
I. Energy efficiency aim to reduce power consumption since mobiles have limited battery life
II. Security and privacy to ensure security signaling messages and protect user location information
III. Heterogeneous networks integration of various access technologies requires seamless mobility management across them
