STARLINK AND E COMMERCE GROWTH IN KENYA: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES.
The Starlink initiative aims to bring high-speed internet to virtually any market worldwide by utilizing low-orbital satellites. Tapping into low-orbital satellites for an internet connection is unlike anything we've seen in the past. This allows us to stream and browse the web with significantly lower latency, resulting in a much better user experience overall.
OPPORTUNITIES
Economic Growth and Opportunities Starlink’s impact extends beyond individual users to entire economies. Reliable internet access is a critical driver of economic growth, fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation. By connecting remote areas to the global economy, Starlink enables new business opportunities and attracts investments in regions previously overlooked.
Small businesses in rural areas can now reach a broader market through e- commerce platforms, while local artisans and craftsmen can showcase their products to a global audience. Moreover, improved connectivity attracts digital nomads and remote workers, who bring with them economic activity and demand for local services. This influx of talent and capital can revitalize rural economies, leading to more sustainable and inclusive growth.
Mobile Connectivity and Broadband Growth:
Kenya’s growing mobile broadband penetration has laid the groundwork for increased internet demand. As of June 2024, mobile broadband subscriptions reached 38.5 million, driven by the expansion of 4G and early 5G networks.
This mobile-first environment creates fertile ground for ISPs like Starlink, which can tap into high demand for internet services both for individuals and businesses.
Enhancement of Service Delivery
The introduction of Starlink has fostered competition, which ultimately benefits consumers and enhances service delivery Importance of Competition
The country’s endorsement of Starlink is based on a fundamental economic principle: competition drives innovation and improves service quality.
Starlink compels established network providers to enhance their offerings to retain customers.
less susceptible to disruptions caused by damaged cables
Starlink’s ability to provide high-speed internet access independent of ground infrastructure becomes even more critical.
Unlike traditional internet service providers (ISPs) reliant on physical cables, Starlink leverages a network of low-orbiting satellites to deliver internet connectivity. This makes it less susceptible to disruptions caused by damaged cables or localized infrastructure issues.
Cross-Border Trade and Global Market Access
International E-Commerce Opportunities: Kenyan businesses, particularly SMEs, can leverage global e-commerce platforms to reach international customers, boosting exports and economic growth.
Foreign Investments: The promise of a growing e-commerce sector supported by better internet infrastructure may attract foreign investments in logistics, technology, and digital platforms.
Boost Digital Payments Integration
The introduction of starlink has brought forth stable and reliable high speed internet which in combination with Kenya’s developed mobile money ecosystem particularly MPESA allows for business to carry out transactions more consistently and reliably.
This improves adoption from both the users and businesses allowing businesses to develop highly sophisticated payment services which offer smooth user experience to the end users and is facilitated over the high speed network provided by Starlink, this in its totality boosts the e-commerce sector as a whole which is mainly composed of mobile device users which need well integrated and seamless payment methods.
Advancement of E-commerce Technology
High Speed internet allows the application of cutting edge e-commerce services previously impractical due to technical connectivity limitations. These services include realtime chat bots, 24/7 customer support and even augmented reality powered shopping which provide personalized and user friendly shopping experience to users. Businesses are also able to monitor real time analytics and inventory management systems efficiently improving business operations and customer satisfaction.
CHALLENGES
Infrastructure and Maintenance Challenges
Satellite Maintenance Issues: Relying on satellite technology means any issues with satellites (e.g., malfunctions, damage from space debris) could disrupt internet service in affected regions. These outages could severely impact businesses relying on stable internet for e-commerce operations.
Data Privacy Concerns
Data Collection by Foreign Entities: Starlink is owned by SpaceX, a U.S.-based company. The potential for cross-border data flows raises concerns over where Kenyan user data is stored, who has access to it, and how it is used, particularly for marketing or surveillance purposes.
Competition with Local Internet Providers
Market Disruption: Starlink’s entry into the Kenyan market may disrupt local internet service providers (ISPs), who could struggle to compete with satellite internet’s broader reach. This could lead to pricing wars or force ISPs innovate to retain customers.
Dependence on a Single Provider:
If Starlink becomes the dominant player in rural areas, this could create an over-reliance on a single service provider, which may be problematic in the event of outages or changes in pricing.
Regulatory and Licensing issues
Starlink has faced regulatory problems in order to adhere to local laws here in Kenya being forced to change in order to adhere to these laws, this can prove to be a challenge for both the ISP and the customers because if ever they fail to adhere to given laws they may be prohibited from providing services within the country affecting both them and customers negatively.
High cost of Starlink services
As of its first introduction in Kenya Starlink was very expensive both to acquire the physical kit necessary for connectivity and the monthly price thereafter, this immediately caused heavy disregard from many users and reverted back to their original service providers. Those prices were not feasible especially for users in rural areas who required the kind of internet service that Starlink provided. Although since then they’ve dropped the price significantly and brought forward leasing of the kit and a smaller package attracting more customers.
